Introductory Certificate in Marketing
The Introductory Certificate in Marketing is an accredited course by the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is for all those who want to find out more about marketing – whether you’re in a job that involves marketing or not. It answers the question: What is marketing? It also aims to develop knowledge and skills for people who are working to support others in basic marketing tasks.
Previous experience and marketing knowledge are not necessary. Whether you are already working and want to study around work commitments, or are looking for a job and have no time to study during the day, you can choose a course to suit your requirements and available time.
Is the CIM Introductory Certificate in Marketing right for you?
No experience or qualifications are needed
This is an ‘open’ qualification, which means you do not need any previous qualifications or marketing experience. However, if you are working or have some business experience, this will certainly help you put your learning into context.

- Understand the function of marketing and its role in an organisation.

There are Two modules namely What is Marketing? and Understanding Customer Relationships. They are pitched at Level 3 which is the same as the British A-level, or the European Baccalaureate.

What is Marketing?
This unit provides a backdrop to the importance of marketing in terms of what marketing is and how it is defined. It focuses on the role of marketing, its cross-functional importance and its contribution to business success. It also looks at the role of marketing as a service provider within the organisation.

- Determine the importance of marketing as a cross-functional activity contributing towards business success.
- Explain the importance of understanding the organisation’s marketing environment and the impact it has upon an organisation’s ability to satisfy customer needs and wants.
- Identify each element of the marketing mix in the context of customer needs and achieving customer satisfaction.
- Apply the marketing mix to a range of different organisational sectors and contexts.
CIM Module Two: Understanding Customer Relationships
Understanding Customer Relationships (UCR)
This unit focuses on developing an understanding of internal and external customers, and considers how a knowledge and understanding of customers can assist in designing appropriate marketing activities to engage and support customers to achieve long-term customer loyalty.

- Explain the importance of understanding customers, and how marketing information aids the better development of marketing activities to achieve customer satisfaction.
- Explain the value and importance of internal and external relationships of the organisation and the importance of networking, collaboration and co-operation in order to develop and maintain relationships.
- Explain the different ways in which to communicate with both internal and external customers in order to develop, maintain and strengthen customer relationships.
- Explain the requirements for developing effective and efficient customer.

What does it cost?
There are two separate sets of fees. You need to take into account fees to Marketing Teacher Ltd for tuition as well and CIM’s membership and assessment fees. Totals are below.
Marketing Teacher’s Fees
Each module for the Introductory Certificate in Marketing costs £250.00 individually, or the equivalent in your local currency. That’s £500.00 in total for all of your online / distance tuition fees to Marketing Teacher Ltd. CIM’s Fees
CIM also have fees for membership and assessment. As of March 2013 these fees are:
- Membership UK and Western Europe £140.00 per annum

- Assessment fees @ £55 each x 2 = £110.00

What are the assessments?
There are two assessments
Both units will have a single assessment as follows:
- Unit 1: What is Marketing? – 1 hour multiple choice test. You need to achieve 65% to pass.
- Unit 2: Understanding Customer Relationships – 3000 word assignment based on your company, or another of your choice. You need to achieve 50% to pass.

Marketing Teacher’s online / distance learning approach is ideal for non-UK students. You are supported by our friendly and enthusiastic online tutors, and have access to the same online lessons and resources as British students. Distance really doesn’t matter. Module One – What is Marketing? is assessed by a 1-hour exam which can often be taken in your own country. Professional Certificate in Marketing
The Professional Certificate in Marketing is an accredited course by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and gives you the practical skills and knowledge to devise and execute marketing activities and gain marketing credibility. It also aims to provide a practical insight into the principles and application of marketing at a tactical level.
The syllabus has been updated recently to reflect the changing issues and practices within marketing and to reflect employers’ views of marketing in today’s business environment. The Qualification is ideal for junior marketers, those working in marketing support roles (like personal assistants); or if marketing plays some part in your current job description.

Unit 1 – Marketing Essentials
The aim of this unit is to provide a detailed explanation of the key theories and practice behind marketing as an exchange process and a business function. This unit introduces individuals to the importance of the marketing planning process and the role of marketing across the organisation.
CIM Module Two: Assessing the Marketing Environment
Unit 2 – Assessing the Marketing Environment
The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the nature and scope of the internal and external marketing environment with broad consideration of the impact of international and global marketing. The unit addresses the key characteristics of the marketing environment and assesses the impact of market forces that are uncontrollable and how an organisation responds to them.
CIM Module Three: Marketing Information and Research
Unit 3 – Marketing Information and Research
This unit focuses on the importance of marketing information in gaining a more in depth understanding of both the market in which the organisation operates and the customers it seeks to serve. The unit explores different research methodologies and encourages consideration of complementary approaches to collecting a range of market and customer information.

Unit 4 – Stakeholder Marketing
By the end of this qualification you should be able to:
The focus of this unit is to recognise the nature and scope of an organisation’s diverse range of stakeholders (of which customers are part) and their relative importance to the marketing process and the market oriented organisation.
The unit considers how to manage stakeholder relationships effectively, in terms of utilising a marketing mix that influences and satisfies stakeholder needs in line with the organisation’s business and marketing objectives.,/p>

Important: As you begin your studies, you must decide when it is best for you to take your assessment (see What are the assessments? below). An exam can be moved to a later date – but CIM will charge you a fee for this, or you will need to pay your examination fee again. With written assignments, which you submit to Marketing Teacher, you must tell us when you wish to submit because the assessment changes. For example the June assessment for Stakeholder Marketing will be different to the December assessment. If you decide to delay a written assessment, CIM will charge a fee and Marketing Teacher will also impose a charge. Please give yourself plenty of time to prepare for submission, and do not rush the learning process.
Typical Start and End Dates.
You can start the Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Certificate in Marketing at one of four points during the year – January, March and September.
- Begin your studies in March. Complete your first two modules by June or September, and your final two modules by September or December.
- Begin your studies in June. Complete your first two modules by September or December, and your final two modules by December or March.
- Begin your studies in September. Complete your first two modules by December or March, and your final two modules by March or June.
- Begin your studies in January. Complete your first two modules by March or June, and your final two modules by June or September.
Most students opt to complete the Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Certificate in Marketing in 9 – 12 months, which is the equivalent to an academic year.
